Why doesn't my bird say that?

I was watching a TV show yesterday and one of the characters have purhcased an Afrrican Grey Parrot and was wondering why the bird would not say what he wanted it to say but the bird say something totally different and the owner of the bird was upset. Well as a owner of 6 parrots I was not surprise. I find most people who buy parrots think they are instance talkers. Well let me the first to tell you they are not!  Parrots are beautiful, funny creatures but they can be diffcult like a 2 year old child. All of my birds talk, for me the most important thing was to get them to say their names and mine and they do.  I will say it was not easy but I was patient and determine. If you want yoru bird to talk you have to be patient, creative and somewhat animated.  Each bird will learn differently and will say what is comfortable for them. You as the owner need to know this and most of all respect them.

I tired to teach a few of my birds to say Obama when he was running for president,  I tried to get my Blue and Gold Macaw to say it.  Instead he told me and I quote,"No Joharah!" I could not get him to say it. So I figure either he thought I was changing his name or he did not like Obama. So I did not get upset with him and I now know my bird is a Republican. You never know. I have 2 birds that have learn to say some not so nice words, what can I say.  All of mine like to sing, do they all sing well? No but to them it is fun and it something we all do together and they like it.

Here is the funny thing my Green WIng Macaw loves my friend and agent Shawn so much that she will sing and dance for him( See her on my facebook page), for me not so much. Over all I am very happy with what they can say and basically know what they won't say not to say every now and then they surprise me.

So if you are willing work hard with them, rewards them, you may get them to talk. Don't punish them or give up on them if they don't say what you want, after all they are only a birds.
